  • 1992/93:

  • 1994:
    • USA (DSS, USSB): MPEG1/1.5

  • 1995:
    • DVB-S -tests on Eutelsat and Astra -satellites.

    • First public prototypes of Nokia Mediamaster 9500-S
  • 1996:
    • DVB-S for consumers in Europe
    • France, Germany, Italy, Benelux, South-Africa, Australia
    • In Germany "d-box1" for DF1 paytv -package (dbox1 is almost same than Mediamaster 9500S)
    • First digital television broadcasts for Finland by Multichoice. Satellite position 19.2'E (Astra), receivers available were Nokia Mediamaster 9500S (around 1000€) and Pace DGT400 (n. 900€).
  • 1997:
    • Canal+ and Norwegian Telenor joined their forces, bought Multichoice from Nethold and launched a new company called Canal Digital (for Scandinavia and Finland).
  • 1998:
    • Common Interface.
    • pay-tv services using DVB-S more widely available in Europe: Spain, Greece, Poland, Egypt, Czhech, UK
    • more and more "free to air" digital television channels - can be received without any paytv subscriptions
    • first DVB-T channels: OnDigital (UK)
  • 1999:
    • DVB-S receivers got more memory, faster processors .. 2 common interfaces and embedded CA
    • DVB-S -paytv in Russia and Turkey
    • DVB-C tests in Finland
  • 2000:
    • Swedish paytv -operator Viasat moved from D2MAC to DVB ("OpenTV" + Viaccess).
    • DVB-S receivers got now Dolby 5.1 and some even more than 2 card readers
    • DVB-T tests in Finland
    • dbox2 in Germany, receiver with local area network connection (both DVB-S and DVB-C versions, by Nokia, Philips and Sagem)

    • so called pluscams (+cam, magic)
    • MPEG2 4:2:2 .. DVB PCI-card could be used to receive 4:2:2

    • DVB HDTV-tests on Astra, Sirius, Eutelsat and Panamsat -satellites
    • Dreambox with Linux operating system, harddisc, lan, usb
    • DVB/MPEG4, Eutelsat OpenSky-service (streaming content through satellites to computer)

    • More Linux-receivers? Like Triple Dragon, Dreambox 7020 and 500, Reelbox
    • Europe's first DVB-S HDTV -channel (by Euro1080)
    • DVB/MPEG4 and DVB/WM9, test on Astra and Eutelsat
  • 2005?
    • Dreambox 7085, dual tuner with DVD-writer
    • TPS and Sky will offer HDTV-channels? Sky will use WM9? 2006?
    • LAN, USB2.0 and harddisc will be standard in high end boxes
