Algebraic Equations Worksheets

I truly am stuck. Please help. Algebra.?
I am trying to do this worksheet, and I honestly don’t know what the hell I’m doing. I HAVE tried. If I could send you a picture I would.
But here is what I am having problems with..
Kevin ran 6 miles more than Steve ran. The sum of their distances is 32 miles. How far did Steve run? The domain of the solution is {6, 10, 13, 26}.
a. Define your variable.
b. Write algebraic expressions for the distances each person ran.
c. Write an equation that can help you solve the problem.
d. Solve the equation (Which number from the replacement set becomes the solution?).
e. Check your answer.
Could someone please show me?
a. Define the variable to be what we want to solve: the number of miles ran by Steve. So let’s call x = miles run by Steve.
b. Steve ran x miles. Kevin ran 6 more than Steve, so Kevin ran x + 6.
c. “The sum of their distances is 32 miles.” If Steve ran x, and Kevin ran x + 6, then we have x + x + 6 = 32.
d. I leave this to you.
e. Make sure your solution makes sense and satisfies the equation in part c.

Galois’ Theory Of Algebraic Equations $36.4 Galois’ Theory of Algebraic Equations gives a detailed account of the development of the theory of algebraic equations, from its origins in ancient times to its completion by Galois in the nineteenth century. The main emphasis is placed on equations of at least the third degree, i.e. on the developments during the period from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The appropriate parts of works by Cardano, Lagrange, Vandermonde, Gauss, Abel and Galois are reviewed and placed in their historical perspective, with the aim of conveying to the reader a sense of the way in which the theory of algebraic equations has evolved and has led to such basic mathematical notions as group and field. |

General Theory of Algebraic Equations $70 This book provides the first English translation of Bezout’s masterpiece, the General Theory of Algebraic Equations . It follows, by almost two hundred years, the English translation of his famous mathematics textbooks. Here, Bézout presents his approach to solving systems of polynomial equations in several variables and in great detail. He introduces the revolutionary notion of the “polynomial multiplier,” which greatly simplifies the problem of variable elimination by reducing it to a system of linear equations. The major result presented in this work, now known as “Bézout’s theorem,” is stated as follows: “The degree of the final equation resulting from an arbitrary number of complete equations containing the same number of unknowns and with arbitrary degrees is equal to the product of the exponents of the degrees of these equations.” The book offers large numbers of results and insights about conditions for polynomials to share a common factor, or to share a common root. It also provides a state-of-the-art analysis of the theories of integration and differentiation of functions in the late eighteenth century, as well as one of the first uses of determinants to solve systems of linear equations. Polynomial multiplier methods have become, today, one of the most promising approaches to solving complex systems of polynomial equations or inequalities, and this translation offers a valuable historic perspective on this active research field. |

Algebraic Approach to Differential Equations $150 Mixing elementary results and advanced methods, "Algebraic Approach to Differential Equations" aims to accustom differential equation specialists to algebraic methods in this area of interest. It presents material from a school organized by The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA). |

Power Geometry in Algebraic and Differential Equations $133 The geometry of power exponents includes the Newton polyhedron, normal cones of its faces, power and logarithmic transformations. On the basis of the geometry universal algorithms for simplifications of systems of nonlinear equations (algebraic, ordinary differential and partial differential) were developed. The algorithms form a new calculus which allows to make local and asymptotical analysis of solutions to those systems. The efficiency of the calculus is demonstrated with regard to several complicated problems from Robotics, Celestial Mechanics, Hydrodynamics and Thermodynamics. The calculus also gives classical results obtained earlier intuitively and is an alternative to Algebraic Geometry, Differential Algebra, Lie group Analysis and Nonstandard Analysis. |
