Online game makes math practice out of this world

Many of today’s teens and young adults grew up practicing math facts by playing out-of-this-world adventures in the “Math Blaster” series of computer games. Originally released in 1987, “Math Blaster” won numerous awards for both home and school use.

Today’s kids now have an opportunity to hone their math skills with this famous license and to do so the way they like to play — by entering a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) called “MathBlaster.com.”

In this 3D browser game, players create their own avatar to become a cadet at the intergalactic Blaster Academy located on a Space Station. Filled with aliens, high-tech gadgets and tons of other kids, players explore a futuristic virtual world that is packed with fun educational
math games
. As they play, they will advance up the ranks to join the Intergalactic Space Patrol (ISP), an elite corps of Blasters who protect and explore the universe.

You design your own avatar — choose female or male, and design it to look human or alien by selecting the head shape, skin color, hair, eyes and mouth. Some avatars can have antennae, three eyes and red hair. Others might have pink or green skin.

You are given a bPad, a gadget you can click on from the main screen. It helps explain the game and keeps track of your progress. You also use it to access messages from the game about new features in this world and to rename or redesign your Blaster avatar.

All players start at Blaster Cadet Rank 1; but as you play, you earn merits that move you up in rank as well as providing you with cool gadgets to use.

As you move through the Blaster world, you will encounter many other players. You can befriend them and chat, using drop-down phrases. There are also non-player characters that will talk to you and give you ideas about things to do. For example, Monty, a floating robot, might suggest that you help collect glowing Luminites so that they can put on a light show.

Most of your time will be spent playing math games, which all have a space theme. For example, in Oozami, players reset switches so that toxic ooze doesn’t take over the Space Station. The game play involves leaping from platform to platform to find the switches. When a switch is found, it is reset by answering a math problem correctly. In another, you rescue robots from being crushed by matching objects on a conveyor belt to corresponding geometric shapes found below.

What makes these math games so compelling is that they can be customized. In Oozami, kids can choose between problems involving money or place value. Then they choose the difficulty level of both the math problems and the actual game play.

Since “MathBlaster.com” is an MMO, it is growing every week as Knowledge Adventure rolls out new games for the cadets to explore. At the time of this publishing, kids can explore the Academy, where they train for missions that will be introduced in a few months. Even without the missions, there is plenty to explore from the get-go.

With chances to advance in rank and plenty of leaderboards showing top scores within the games, kids are motivated to keep playing.

And not all the games are math-oriented — some are just for fun, including ones about blasting targets. Plus, kids can swim and rock climb. Spontaneous disco parties where your avatar can dance are also known to occur.

Built for kids ages 6 to 12, players can enter this MMO for free, but a deeper experience is offered to paid subscribers.

MathBlaster offers three choices for paid memberships at $7.99 monthly, $74.99 annually or $149.99 for a lifetime. A membership is for a family, which means up to six kids can play.

More impressive is that a membership in MathBlaster.com also grants a family a paid membership in Jumpstart.com, another educational virtual world for kids ages 3 to 10. Since JumpStart.com has been around since 2009, it is a more robust world to explore, but it skews younger. Plus, families can also download four other JumpStart games for free.

With two virtual worlds and four extra games, a membership in “MathBlaster.com” offers a lot of educational bang for the buck.

Score: 4 stars (out of 4)

Best for ages: 6 to 12

Platform: Windows or Mac

Publisher: Knowledge Adventure, www.MathBlaster.com

Price: $7.99 monthly, $74.99 annually or $149.99 for a lifetime
